Prince of Persia - The Two Thrones
If Prince thinks he has it hard waiting for mum to shuffle off into retirement, he should try being a Prince Persia.
There, the role is less about growing organic jam and having your bum wiped by courtiers, and more about rope swinging, swordfighting and spiked-pit-leaping. Frankly, Charles would struggle. Although we reckon Camilla could probably manage it.
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is the latest and best in Gameloft's middle-eastern action adventure series. It sees you performing your usual leapy fighty heroism in order to defeat an evil Vizier who's trying to steal your throne.
A welcome new inclusion in this game is the chariot racing mini-game that pops up every so often in between levels. You have to ride through the streets of Babylon (why not the rivers, we wonder?), avoiding obstacles and seeing off enemy riders. These events don't last very long, but break up the platform action nicely.
As action-platformers go on mobile phones, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is up there with the very best. It could be longer � experienced gamers will rattle through it fairly quickly � but the visuals and variety show that Gameloft has opted for quality rather than quantity.

Rayman Kart
Whenever you play a game featuring colourful characters racing round courses firing weapons at each other, the great big elephant on the track is Nintendo's Mario kart. It's pretty much defined the genre, however hard developers try to escape its moustachioed embrace.
purists can probably pick out 234 ways in which Rayman Kart't measure up to, say, Mario kart DS. But we're talking mobile games here, and Rayman Kart' is head and shoulders (but not neck, obviously) above the competition.

Mission Imposible III
Who would have thought the same man who favours the silent birth and promotes living at one with vegetables could deliver such an iconic portrayal of super-spy Ethan Hunt? Though he may have descended from space aliens (or something like that), this is a man who can still charm the ladies (and men, if the rumours are to be believed), dodge bullets and duck under exploding helicopters, all whilst maintaining his perfect coiffure.
We speak, of course, of Tom Cruise, whose immense stature � in terms of blockbuster bankability, rather than physical size � has been transferred to mobile phone for the second summer running.
Last summer it was War of the Worlds. This time it's Mission Imposible III, in which the obligatory bio-chemical weapons go missing, and you, as Ethan Hunt, are charged with finding them. Cue ten levels of scrolling platform action that'll take you around the world as you do so, with Gameloft incorporating most of the blockbusters' more adrenaline-filled scenes into the travel itineray.
The visuals and sound are also mission: accomplished. As you'd hope for in a movie tie-in, the graphics are very slick, with crisp animation and an engrossing style. In fact the overall presentation is every bit as polished as Tom's trademark grin, with the famous theme tune setting the tone from the game's opening. If you weren't feeling the spy-vibe before, you will from the moment you load up.
With so much playability and unapologetic high-octane action on offer, Mission Imposible III manages to capture some of the same magic that makes the film franchise upon which it's based so popular, squeezing out all of the bangs you'd want from your blockbuster buck.

Rayman Raving Rabbids
As a threat to your survival they rank alongside global warming, meteorites, man-eating tigers and bird flu. Yet they're perhaps more insidious than all those combined because of their unassuming guise. That's right: we're talking about rabbits.They've ruined Australia's indigenous mammal population and, in Rayman Raving Rabbids, they're doing the same thing to Rayman's home, too. Once small, furry and harmless creatures, the rabbits mysteriously disappeared one day, returning many months later as deranged, evil 'rabbids' (they'd evidently caught a bad cold while away) intent on imprisoning the local fauna.
What it means for you is a less successful resolution than Rayman receives. While he has the joy of liberating his furry friends, you're left after completing the last level feeling a bit empty and unsatisfied. And despite there being two boss characters in the middle levels to overcome � each of which provides some closure on the jungle and desert island jaunts � there's no such thing at the very end.Rayman Rabbids is a short, sweet collection of empty gaming calories. For a more substantial � and less ecologically harmful � experience, stick with the hedgehog.

Shrek 3
Kids will love Shrek Third, and we'd heartily recommend it if you have an ogre-loving child who needs entertaining on a long car journey. It's accessible, you never end up stuck after making a mistimed jump, and there are plenty of checkpoints and health-replenishing power-ups to keep you progressing smoothly through the game.
What about adults about this game? The cheeky nods to retro games will raise a smile, but the multiple-level humour of the Shrek 3 doesn't really feature much in this game. Meanwhile, judged as a pure platformer, it's only challenging on Hard difficulty level, which you're forced to play through the Medium level to unlock.
So, it's a well-crafted game that's full of platformy goodness to give your kids a treat.

Surf's Up
ou can't deny penguins have been enjoying a lot of exposure recently. Documentary March of the Penguins kicked off the procession and was followed by animated films Happy Feet and, most recently, Surf's Up.
Even so, Surf's Up is highly entertaining and more challenging than you might expect. Every level offers something new and the game gives you a variation of action with its mix of platforming and surfing sections. Kicking crabs along the ice and slip-sliding at top speed through levels (which remind us of the ice levels of the PSP's Loco roco fails to raise a smile.
They might traditionally have been popular because they're cute, but there's clearly more to penguins than just blubbery appeal. Turns out all you need to unlock their fun side is hand them a surfboard.

Driver LA Undercover
Apparently, some people find that it can make learning to drive a car easier if you've played video games that put you behind the wheel. Your hand/eye coordination is improved, you learn rudimentary road skills and gain a basic – or advanced, depending on your inclination – education in how a car actually works.
The amount of play that Driver: L.A. Undercover offers to you as a prospective freelance wheelman (or woman, if that's you) is sizeable and enough to keep you occupied for hours on end. Which should come in handy when you're next sat in a garage waiting room in the real world, passing time while the mechanics refit your car's suspension.

Tropical Madness
With autumn on the way, most squirrels are busying themselves burying acorns while being generally bushy-tailed.
The last thing they'd want to be doing, you'd imagine, is taking on bats, giant snakes and crabs while dodging pits of fire and spikes. They'd rather prepare their nest in some hollow tree and get ready to sleep. I know I would.
The recent classic Super Monkey Ball games are an influence, as well as the older Marble Madness, which is itself now on mobile too. Tropical Madness tends towards the latter, as you directly control your spinning hero, rather than tilting the platforms as is the case in Super Monkey Ball.
Visually, Tropical Madness is undeniably a bit of a looker. Considering the viewpoint, Gameloft has managed to get a high level of cuteness, personality and detail to resonate from the tiny mobile screen.
Well-animated characters and colourful backgrounds shift along, with a smooth scrolling rate. At times the game ups the ante too, with Furrito hitting full speed and bouncing off the barriers and walls pinball-style, charging through loop-the-loops, leaping huge chasms and plummeting down water flumes. It's pretty impressive.
Overall, Tropical Madness is an enjoyable and challenging game that just happens to be easy on the eye. It's well worth a place on your phone's memory card.

Deal or no Deal
Deal Or No Deal is a decent, if limited, game, and judging by the success of other TV quiz conversions on mobile, it'll sell well – at least until the bubble bursts for the TV series in the real world.Opting to miss out the post-Deal box-opening is a baffling decision though, given that most people who buy the game will be proper fans of the series. And if they were going to tweak the game, they could have put in some kind of pass-the-handset multiplayer mode.Still, if you want more Noel than your TV can provide and don't mind these niggles, Deal Or No Deal is well worth a look.

Might and Magic
Might and Magic's puzzles really are sufficiently complex and expertly engineered to stand up to the very best, and many will have you thinking. They involve exploration, trial and error and serious contemplation of the various skills you end up with spread between the characters.But the journey isn't all puzzling, of course. Combat against adversaries such as bats, fire-throwing bosses and huge spiky-ball wielding monsters features prominently. Some just require a few sword-slashes, while others need to be stunned with the appropriate item before moving in for an attack.
Might and Magic is a huge game, in more than one sense. It's one that is also packed with creativity and puzzles that seldom repeat. Gradually building up your characters into a multi-talented team of specialists and making them work together to solve these challenges proves hugely satisfying.But it's the overall experience so expertly crafted by the developer that most impresses. Simply put, there aren't many mobile games out there as good as this. If you're looking for talent for your phone, you've found it.

Gangstar: Crime City
Boy, Grand Theft Auto creator Rockstar has a lot to answer for. Not to the politicians or parental lobbies who've slammed the violence in its games. But to those of us who are sick of the number of clone games that GTA has inspired.Which brings us neatly to Gangstar: Crime City, a game so much like GTA, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Gameloft just put a PS2 disc in a photocopier and Tippexed out the name. There's even an odd similarity to one or two bits of artwork in both games.You can't blame them, though. As the best-selling game in the world, GTA has a lot going for it, so whoever (legally) nails the art of replicating its closely-guarded formula on mobile deserves some credit.
In total then, although it's not the best it could be, Gangstar: Crime City is a good stab/shot/other-violent-metaphorical-verb at turning GTA into mobile form. Solid, if not completely polished. Plush PSP owners might prefer the real deal, Grand Theft Auto Vice City stories after all offering the original source material on their console, but the rest of us pimped-up tricked-out gangstars won't go wrong in deciding to stump up a mere fiver for Gameloft's GTA-like fun.

Lost
You've gotta love The Others. No, not the rubbish indie band. The Others in Lost. Y'know, the mysterious island denizens who make life hell for that stubbly chap and his stranded mates. A Lost game where you got to play as The Others would be great fun, wreaking havoc and trying to kill everyone off to avoid another far-fetched season of the show.
This game isn't it, but what it is is a polished and atmospheric action game that does a good job of condensing Lost for the small screen without a) turning it into a platform game, b) revealing any plot spoilers, or c) including the hobbit bloke's comical Britpop band flashbacks. And that's something to be thankful for.
Lost rough narrative of the show's first series, taking in a number of memorable set-pieces. The game starts just after the plane crash, and has you (as Jack) scuttling about rescuing fellow passengers as explosions rage around you.
Don't get us wrong: Lost still a high-quality game whose best trait is its sheer pace. The action scenes are frenetic, and you're constantly no more than a screen away from doing something exciting.
If you're looking for an island-based action-adventure, our preference would still be for Stranded, but of course fans of the TV series will opt for Lost every time, and chances are they'll enjoy what they find. Like the TV show, there's every chance this game will spawn sequels in the future, so perhaps more grizzled mobile gamers can hope for something a little more taxing then, too.

Gameloft Darkest Fear 2 - Grim Oak
However, Darkest Fear 2 breaks the mould. And while it may seem nerdy to bang on about great lighting before mentioning the gameplay, it's one of the aspects that sets this spooky action-adventure apart from the crowd – and it actually affects the gameplay.
Darkest Fear 2 isone of the first mobile attempts at a survival horror game that actually succeeds in sending a chill up your spine. It takes a top-down viewpoint, and has you walking around the town solving puzzles, avoiding the monsters, and trying to figure out what those monks are up to.
Overall, this is a polished adventure game that displays true craft, from the atmospheric lighting through to the dialogue and little graphical touches. And if it scares the willies out of you along the way, so much the better.

King Kong The Official Game
ou might just have heard of this new King Kong film. Featuring a big ape beating his chest whilst blurting out "ooh ooh" for hours (no, it's not the latest Michael Moore polemic), it's the big new Hollywood blockbuster which is truly epic in scale, costing over $200 million to make and running for longer than 3 hours. All of which leads us to ask how it could possibly transfer to the small screen of the mobile world? Squeezing such a great lunk of a monkey into your handset is a challenge for any developer, and turning the tide of lacklustre movie conversions is equally audacious a task. So praise be, then, that Gameloft pulled off some true monkey magic.
So, if you fancy playing as a big monkey and rescuing a blonde broad, as they say in the 1930's, then this really is worth checking out. A game that's been crafted with great effort and skill, King Kong sure to guarantee enjoyment for many weeks.

Rayman Golf
Rayman has a strange physique, that's for sure, which marries a dog with a duck, with an added hint of urban chav. But the most disturbing thing isn't that his two eyes are joined as one, or that his ears are actually his hair, but rather that none of his limbs are attached to his body in any way, other than with recourse to his 'special' powers.
In conclusion, Rayman Golf a straightforward game that's easy to pick up, even with the occasionally frustrating nature of timing your shots. Die-hard golfing fans may not appreciate watching their ball stop dead as it hits the ground and, as the ripples of discontent work their way through the straight-trouser brigade, Rayman Golf never stand being compared head-to-head with, say, Tiger Woods PGA Tour.
But while this isn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination, there is a surprisingly innocent charm that younger gamers may find appealing. If you like your golf and without any hint of pretentiousness, Rayman Golf is well worth a shot.

Playman Extreme Runnig
Thankfully, it wasn't, so parkour is the bee's knees of made-up urban sports – although, admittedly, all it's competing with is urban golf. That and abusing traffic wardens.
It might seem like a strange choice of sport for Playman, RealArcade's mobile hero who's previously chanced his arm (and legs) at athletics, winter sports, football and volleyball. A strange choice, but an excellent one it turns out, for Playman Extreme Running is a supremely accessible mobile game with bags of character – and huge replayability.
It's also the first Playman game to feature two main characters; Playman and his sister Blaise. Your task is to run, jump and somersault your way through 12 locations, each containing three to five different missions.
These include sprints where you race another character, flag hunts where you have to explore the level to find five flags, and 'Score FLOWs' where you have to rack up points performing stunts while running a finish marker.
there's an ace pass-the-handset multiplayer mode where you try to beat each other's scores and times, too. This really is one of the most well-crafted mobile games we've played this year and, even without whizzy 3D graphics, is one of those titles you'll recommend to friends to show them what mobile is capable of.

Prince of Persia
Take the Prince of Persia. Gaming's most famous royal has already light-footedly darted, swung and climbed his way through two mobile titles – Two Thrones and Warrior Within – but those are just two of his most recent adventures. The Prince has been around for far longer and now Gameloft is taking him back to his roots, in a game based on the classic 1989 original outing in which your goal is very simple: reach the princess within one real-time hour or she'll be executed and you might as well hang up your sandals in shame (an emotion seemingly missing in many a modern prince).
The first thing Gameloft has got right is the control, which is remarkably fluid and seamless.
It's a hardcore challenge but that's sure to add to the appeal for fans of the original adventure. Thankfully, there's been little dumbing it down for mobile – levels are tricky to find your way to the end of and many drops are a leap of faith. Okay, a mini-map element has been implemented, which helps massively by marking off areas you've visited and highlighting where objectives are positioned, but you have to find the map in the level first, and it's always well hidden.
Everything taken in account – the fluid, intuitive platforming and the clever puzzling – Prince of Persia Classic is a shining example to all mobile platform games out there. It doesn't have the same sort of modern action or thrills as Two Thrones, but its core gameplay is near flawless and is a wonderful reminder of the fact that good, solid concepts stand the test of time. Which is more than you can say of many of today's princes.
